Masked Man's lightning: Is it PSI or not?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 02:23 PM PST

There are some similarities and differences between the Masked Man's lightning attack and other lightning-based PSI in the Mother series. For starters, his attack can hit 3+ party members, a trait shared with PK Thunder γ and Ω and PK Beam Ω. It seems to be closer to the version of PK Thunder from EarthBound Beginnings, as it rarely ever misses. Masked Man's lightning attack is also similar in nature to PK Beam γ. Unlike PK Thunder and all other levels of PK Beam, PK Beam γ can instantly defeat you if used against you. The Masked Man's lightning attack can similarly cause instant mortal damage. PK Beam γ and all levels of PK Thunder can also be deflected by the Franklin Badge, and the Masked Man's lightning attack is no exception. An additional note worth mentioning is the fact that the Masked Man can use his lightning attack without his gear, evidenced in the final battle. When the Masked Man removes his helmet, sword, and cannon, he is still capable of using his lightning attack, although he uses it to kill himself. This observation leans more towards the lightning attack being PSI.

There are some details that contradict the idea of the attack being PSI, however. The game does not name Masked Man's lightning attack as PSI, and the default enemy action sound is heard instead of the enemy PSI jingle when he uses said attack. I haven't tried using a PSI Shield against the Masked Man to check whether the game classifies the lightning attack as PSI damage, but I'd like to believe that if one were to block the lightning attack with a PSI Shield, it would make no difference (provided you could put up a shield without the Masked Man using the Shield Killer on it). If the attack isn't PSI and he can still use the attack without his gear, then the electricity must come from the Masked Man's suit or possibly internal cybernetics. It isn't too far-fetched to believe that the Pigmask scientists built a generator into the Masked Man to power both his electric attacks and his jetpack.

And that is all the info I wanted to present. What are your headcanons? Did I miss anything? Please share below!

To everyone playing authentic carts on old school snes, what is your set up? I have my snes plugged into a rva to hdmi cable converter and it looks bad. Any recommendations?

    I have a feeling something’s coming.

I don't know what or why but I just have a feeling SOMETHING is going to happen for the Earthbound community soon. Maybe it's because of the lack of Earthbound on SNES online, maybe it's because of how quiet Nintendo has been about their 2020 releases, maybe it's due to the 30th anniversary hardly being recognized, maybe I'm praying for an announcement of sorts at the game awards.

    I'm probably wrong.

    But here's hoping.
