Is it just me or was Earthbound heavily influenced by "A boy named Charlie Brown" (1969)? Posted: 01 May 2021 06:28 AM PDT Earthbound is renowned for its Western/Americana aesthetic and given that Itoi never lived in the US, he must've drawn inspiration from foreign media much like team silent made Silent Hill based on western surreal horror, specifically the works of David Lynch or like Miyamoto based Link from the Legend of Zelda on Peter Pan. One possible source of inspiration I think was A boy named Charlie Brown which came out in 1969 well before the game came out. The humor, idiosyncrasies and even proportions of the characters in that film remind me of Earthbound. Also the countryside scenery and artsy abstract sequences remind me of certain battles/locations in the game. I cannot find any official statements about the inspirations behind the atmosphere of the game (except for the whole gygas trauma story) but this seems like a likely candidate for me. What do you think influenced Itoi? [link] [comments]
Little known Earthbound characters: Koyano Posted: 01 May 2021 07:18 AM PDT I was reading Teddy's page on WikiBound, and I found a mention of a character that isn't mentioned anywhere else on the Wiki: Koyano. Although he isn't a character that is mentioned in the game, he is brought up in Encyclopedia Mother, a guide for the game that also contains fun facts about the Mother universe. From what I could gather from a fan translation, Koyano is a Japanese member of the B.B. Gang that gave Teddy an autobiography of a Japanese musician named Eikichi Yazawa (Who actually exists in real life and is still alive today). Although Teddy doesn't know how to read Japanese he "can feel full well the message from a rock 'n roller of a far east country." So that's Koyano for you! If this post gets enough likes, then I might start a series like this, were I go over obscure Earthbound characters! (Also, side note. While I was researching stuff on Koyano, I realized that he shares his name with Master Belch's voice actor. What a coincidence!) [link] [comments]

Earthbound sanctuary bosses: easiest to hardest Posted: 01 May 2021 04:10 PM PDT 8: Electro SpecterYes, the second to last sanctuary boss in the game is the easiest. There's a large gap between the 6th and the 7th sanctuary, especially if you're hunting Starman Supers to extinction, so you might think that there would be a challenging boss. Let's just say you don't need a sword of kings to beat this piece of plastic. It can use Thunder Beta, but one of you party members probably has a Franklin Badge anyways. The Shield Killer is useless because you won't need shields to defeat this boss, and the Neutralizer removes its own shield. The only threat is the Hungry HP sucker, which doesn't deal that much damage. This boss is just "If Jeff was weak", which is untrue for Jeff, who can finish the boss with a single Multi Bottle Rocket. 7: Mondo MoleThis boss is pretty easy, just have Ness use Paralysis, then bash away. This boss is earlier in the game, so you might not know that Paralysis is effective, which is why I put it after Electro Specter. 6: ShrooomThis boss is pretty forgettable. I guess it can mushroomize you, but you should just have Jeff spam Big Bottle Rockets and hope for the best. 5: Thunder and StormThis boss might be harder depending on when you fight it. If you fight it after you beat the pyramid section, and not directly after the Plague Rat of Doom, you should be fine, especially if you loaded Jeff up on Multi Bottle Rockets. Otherwise, you should just Flash it and hope it gets paralyzed. 4: Plague Rat of DoomAgain, this is dependent on when you fight it. This ranking is based on when I fought it, before getting Multi Bottle Rockets. So I just had Jeff use Big Bottle Rockets, which also killed it pretty quickly. The only hard part is that it lands a lot of critical hits. 3: Carbon DogThis is the final sanctuary guardian, and its transformation may catch you off guard. Of course, you can always use the Multi Bottle Rockets. One to kill the Carbon Dog, two more to finish off the Diamond Dog. See a pattern here? Take advantage of the scrolling HP so you can use your other party members to PSI Lifeup Jeff. 2: Trillionage SproutThis boss comes after a pretty stressful point in the game, where you have to free Threed from zombies, beat an annoyingly hard Mini Barf, have to go through a factory with tons of dead ends, and I haven't even gotten to the sanctuary yet. Of course, you don't have to defeat it right after Master Belch, but it was intended to be done right after. The enemies you fight are probably the hardest in the game for the next few sanctuaries, and you will probably be weakened when you get to the sprout itself. Also, you have Jeff in your party, but you don't have a reliable source of Big Bottle Rockets yet, so he is pretty much worthless. The boss is also very annoying, since it can paralyze you, make a PSI shield, and the sprouts on its side use Lifeup and reproduce asexually. Did I mention that this is the first enemy in the game that can diamondize you? 1: Titanic AntYes, the first sanctuary boss in the game is the hardest. Actually, it's easy to see why, as the game is harder when you only have Ness. The cave housing the ant is the first real dungeon in the game, and you'll be wasting a lot of your PP on Lifeup. When you get to the boss, the only way to reliably deal damage to it is with PSI Rockin, and it has PSI Magnet. The Black Antoids on its side are just as annoying as the allies of the Trillionage Sprout as well. This was the only sanctuary boss in the game where I had to grind to defeat it. How do you continue playing EarthBound Posted: 01 May 2021 02:59 PM PDT So a while ago I finished earthbound on the Virtual Consol on my DS. Recently I wanted to play it again or at least go to my last saved but when I load it up it just says "the end…?" What do I do, how do I continue playing, do I have to restart now? Earthbound Beginnings Melodies Posted: 01 May 2021 07:11 AM PDT I came across this and knew immediately this needed to be shared to the Earthbound Universe. "So I have a theory on how each Melody ended up in such weird places: Melody 1 (Music Box): George had the music box made to play the full song for Maria as a gift. It was put in the doll as a wind-up toy, but after a while the Key broke off and it was forgotten that the music box was inside. After constant "Playtime" with the doll, the Music Box was beaten up to the point where it could only play the first melody. Melody 2 (Mother Canary): While George worked, he whistled. His favorite thing to whistle was the Second Melody. The canaries heard this tune, and continue to sing it, long after George passed. Melody 3 (Singing Monkey): Surely during George's PSI experiments, you'd have to start with something before humans. One of his test subjects was a monkey, who gained Minor Telepathy. With his telepathy, he learnt the Third Melody from George's thoughts. After being brought to the zoo, he taught the melody to his children, and so on. Melody 4 (Haunted Piano): The Eight Melodies weren't exclusive to just Mary, surely, if a pianist had a sheet of the Eight Melodies, they could play it. And maybe that Pianist worked for the Rosemarys. And died in their Mansion. And now haunts their piano, as well as beacons other horrors. Melody 5 (Sitting Cactus): An even earlier PSI experiment done by George was on a cactus in Yucca Desert. Deeming it a failure, George left the cactus to grow. Little did he know, the Cactus would grow not just in size, but to love it's one memory it read of George. And for whatever reason, it just kept singing. Melody 6 (The Dragon): Mary's negativity and denial manifest as the sleeping dragon. As much as she wants to forget her past, she still loves Giegue dearly, and keeps it all hidden away within the Dragon. Part of that Denial was forgetting the Melody, the Sixth being her favorite. Melody 7 (EVE's remains): George programmed EVE to do many things, and play the Melody of his wife happened to be one. After EVE's destruction, all she could do was play the Seventh Melody. Melody 8 (XX stone): George's final resting place. As his life ended, he had his grave embedded with the ending of his wife's lullaby, knowing he would meet her on the other side."
