RPG Games with Combat like Mother 3? Posted: 10 Sep 2020 11:30 AM PDT I played Mother 3 a while ago, and I loved the combat system. Preforming extra attacks by pressing the button to the beat of the music was very fun! With all the funky tracks in the game, every battle felt interactive. I tried playing Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, but the combat system felt so stale. Can someone make a recommendation of games with combat like Mother 3? (I think Mario RPG has something similar.) The similarities between Neon Genesis Evangelion and Mother 3 are pretty interesting... Posted: 10 Sep 2020 09:03 AM PDT For any of you who don't know what Neon Genesis Evangelion is, please watch it and then read this post. It's a 26 episode anime with a movie (EoE) from 1995, all of which can be found on Netflix. I highly recommend it if you played Mother 3 and want to feel mindblown and sad again. Similarities start here. Major spoiler warning for Neon Genesis Evangelion (NGE), End of Evangelion (EoE), and Mother 3 (M3). A young child tragically loses their mother to technology (Yui "dies" in a contact experiment with EVA-01, Hinawa is killed by the Mecha Drago.) The protagonist is a young child (For the main story, Shinji is 14 and Lucas is 12). Shinji's personality is extremely close to Lucas's personality before M3's timeskip. Before the timeskip, Lucas is portrayed as a coddled, shy, shut-in, crybaby with nervous tendencies. Sound familiar? The main protagonist is accompanied by a feisty, tomboyish girl. In NGE, this girl is Asuka. In M3, this girl is Kumatora. Both are portrayed as hotheaded, impulsive, loud-mouthed, rude, and violent. Both characters also suffer from low self-esteem. Asuka has multiple instances where she claims to hate herself, often leading to mental breakdowns. In M3's Tanetane Island, Lucas's party eats mushrooms that cause a bad trip where the party sees hallucinations that reflect the state of their hearts. Kumatora gets a line saying "Kumatora isn't a princess. She's like a stick no one loves." It's also worth noting that both characters act as a foil to the main protagonists' quiet and passive characteristics. Both Shinji and Lucas's fathers ignore their sons as a method to cope with the loss of their wives, which affects the main protagonists. Shinji grows to hate his father for it, while Lucas is subconsciously afraid of his father as shown in Tanetane Island. Both fathers are portrayed as intimidating men who spend the majority of the story trying to recover a family member they lost (Gendo tries to bring Yui back, while Flint searches for his missing son Claus). In NGE and M3, there's huge themes about escapism and imperfection. In NGE, many characters escape reality by occupying themselves with things like music, sex, sleep, and alcohol, which isolates them from their peers and causes many social problems. M3 also has this in the form of Happy Boxes, entertainment devices made by the antagonists to destroy the social bonds of Lucas's hometown. These hypnotic Happy Boxes offer a form of escape for the villagers, destroying their social connections and causing them to slowly reject each other. Club Titiboo is also a form of escapism, but not to the extent of Happy Boxes. In NGE, no one is perfect. This is shown multiple times in almost all of the main cast of characters. Some characters and ideas appear to be perfect at first glance, but the more they're expanded on, the more their issues become evident. This is shown to its full extent in episodes 25 and 26 of NGE. In M3, everything seems perfect after the antagonists reform Lucas's hometown. There's cars, an economy, advanced technology, and happiness everywhere. But it's nowhere near perfect, as the villagers only believe they're happy because they're conditioned to believe so. There are abusive police officers, hostile chimeras lurking around, rude behavior, greed, and emptiness everywhere in Lucas's hometown. Both Shinji and Lucas have trippy hallucinations of their friends and family challenging their views and ideas, most often in rude manners. These hallucinations also show the damaged state of the protagonist's heart. In NGE, this happens multiple times throughout the series and reaches its climax in EoE during the Third Impact. In M3, this can be seen in Tanetane Island during Lucas and co.'s bad mushroom trip. Shinji and Lucas also have multiple visions of their dead mothers' spirits calling out to them. Shinji sees Yui's spirit trying to embrace him while Shinji is absorbed within EVA-01's core. Later on, in EoE, Yui's spirit converses with Shinji after the Third Impact. In M3's Sunflower Fields, Hinawa's spirit innocently coaxes Lucas into jumping off a cliff into her arms, and Lucas falls into a hay pile. Hinawa later appears in the climax of the final battle, crying out to Lucas and his brainwashed brother to stop fighting. Both NGE (More specifically EoE) and M3 have very similar endings that involve the main protagonist recreating the world to their own liking through a constrained God-like being that is freed from its restraints due to a main character's actions (In EoE, Rei fuses with Lilith and frees her, while in M3, Lucas pulls the last needle, unsealing the Dark Dragon). Both endings are intentionally left vague to be interpreted by the viewer/player. Bonus: Here's an EarthBound easter egg found in NGE. Maybe Itoi returned the favor and added themes from NGE/EoE. https://www.nsidr.com/posts/earthbound-and-evangelion-separated-at-birth [link] [comments] | ||
